Special Issue on Lithuanian Folk Songs
CD included

This CD of Lithuanian folk songs is representative of various regions and dialects of Lithuania.  It includes sutartinės - polyphonic chant - an archaic and distinctively Lithuanian singing style. The CD is a compendium of Lithuanian folk songs, some originally recorded in the 1930s, showing the transition of folk songs to modern and classical adaptations.

The accompanying articles describe the development of Lithuanian song. One article focuses just on the sutartinės and their place in Lithuanian music. Another one examines the role songs played in the post WWII Lithuanian resistance movements. Also reviewed is the history of Lithuanian-American singing traditions and their major choral events and song festivals during the last century.

Song Issue and CD still available
